Sverdrup meets Lambert: analytical solution for Sverdrup’s critical depth

چکیده
Abstract In his 1953 paper, Harald Sverdrup argued that the development of a spring bloom in ocean depends on juxtaposition two depth horizons: mixed-layer and critical depth. Mixed-layer shallower than favours phytoplankton growth layer vice versa. However, mathematically, left problem unsolved form transcendental equation. spite high number citations this paper has garnered, solution to equation not been found, until now. work, we present an analytical for depth, as originally defined by Sverdrup. The opens with definition description Lambert W function. follows. Sverdrup’s original model is extended include effect light attenuation steady-state biomass mixed derived. expression production at steady state also presented. Two novel variants are defined: optically uncoupled coupled It demonstrated equals irradiance base Competitive exclusion hold linked intensity multi-species competition. Finally, conservation principle found.

Sverdrup critical depth and the role of water clarity in Norwegian Coastal Water
The critical depth concept was first recognized by Gran and Braarud (1935). During summer, in the Bay of Fundy, they observed an unexpected no bloom situation. Their interpretation was that high amounts of detritus of terrestrial origin caused too murky water and insufficient light for the tidallymixedphytoplankton. Almost 20 years later, thiswas elaboratedby Sverdrup (1953) into ahypothesis fo...

Micro channel gas flows are of importance in a range Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). Due to the confined geometry of the channel, the mean free path of the gas can be comparable to the characteristic length of the micro channel, leading to slip-like flow behavior and strong diffusion-enhanced transport of mass and momentum. The Extended Navier Stokes Equations (ENSE) have successfully ...

A serious problem in emergency medicine is the correct evaluation of skin burn depth to make the appropriate choice of treatment. In clinical practice, there is no difficulty in classifying first- and third-degree burns correctly. However, differentiation between the IIa (superficial dermal) and IIb (deep dermal) wounds is problematic even for experienced practitioners. In this work, the use of...
متن کاملAn Analytical Solution for Inverse Determination of Residual Stress Field
An analytical solution is presented that reconstructs residual stress field from limited and incomplete data. The inverse problem of reconstructing residual stresses is solved using an appropriate form of the airy stress function. This function is chosen to satisfy the stress equilibrium equations together with the boundary conditions for a domain within a convex polygon. The analytical solu...
